The Samaritan Woman - Not An Adulteress

Exod. 20:14 "You shall not commit adultery."
Lev. 20:10 "The man who commits adultery with another man's wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress, shall surely be put to death."
See (Put Evil Away From You)
Deut. 22:22 "If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then both of them shall die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so you shall put away the evil person from Israel."
John 4:5-42
This is the story about the Samaritan woman at the well to whom the Lord said, "but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him, will never thirst..." (vs. 14) . He commanded, "... 'Go, call your husband, and come here.' " (vs. 16) She said, "...I have no husband. ..." (vs. 17) The Lord responded, "for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly." (vs.18)
Israel insight
It is sometimes said that this woman is an adulterous, but we were told that had she been they would have stoned her like they tried to do in John 8:3-11 with the woman who was caught in the act. The Lord kept them from killing her by saying "...He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first." (vs. 7) After all had left He told her to "...go and sin no more." (vs. 11) In the case of this Samaritan woman the Lord did not tell her she had sinned. I learned in Israel that it was likely she had been married and divorced many times because she was barren. She went to the well at the sixth hour (noon) to avoid being provoked by the other women.
Examples: Gen. 16:4 (Sarai)
"So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became despised in her eyes."
And 1 Sam. 1:6 (Hannah)
"And her rival also provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the Lord had closed her womb."
It was explained that one or more of her husbands may have died but she was now married common law. They would have it witnessed by the law. He gives her a present that amounts to 5 cents, and says the blessing in front of two men without a ceremony. Jesus encouraged her to drink of the fountain of everlasting life and fill the void that was in her life.
