|

"Now this was the custom in former times in Israel
concerning redeeming and exchanging, to confirm anything: one man took off his
sandal and gave it to the other, and this was an attestation in Israel.

his sandal." |
2 Sam. 15:14, 30 |
"So David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, 'Arise, and let us flee; or else we shall not escape from Absalom. Make haste to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly and bring disaster upon us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword...So David went up by the ascent of the Mount of
Olives, and wept as he went up; and he had his head covered and went barefoot.
And all the people who were with him covered their heads and went up, weeping
as they went up." |
Luke 3:16
|
"John answered, saying to them all, 'I indeed baptize
you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not
worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.' "
Note: Sandals were
removed on holy ground - were worn to eat the Lord's Passover in haste - were
given to another as an attestation - were removed when leaving Jerusalem in
mourning - and removing of was an act of homage. |
