You Shall Not Steal Or Covet

Exod. 20:15 "You shall not steal."
Exod. 20:17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's."
Exod. 21:16 "He who kidnaps a man and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, shall surely be put to death."
Exod. 22:1-15 "If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and slaughters it or sells it, he shall restore five oxen for an ox and four sheep for a sheep. If the thief is found breaking in, and he is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt for his bloodshed. If the sun has risen on him, there shall be guilt for his bloodshed. He should make full restitution; if he has nothing, then he shall be *sold (sold as a slave) for his theft. If the theft is certainly found alive in his hand, whether it is an ox or donkey or sheep, he shall restore double. If a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed, and lets loose his animal, and it feeds in another man's field, he shall make restitution from the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard. If fire breaks out and catches in thorns, so that stacked grain, standing grain, or the field is consumed, he who kindled the fire shall surely make restitution. If a man delivers to his neighbor money or articles to keep, and it is stolen out of the man's house, if the thief is found, he shall pay double. If the thief is not found, then the master of the house shall be brought to the judges to see whether he has put his hand into his neighbor's goods. For any kind of trespass, whether it concerns an ox, a donkey, a sheep, or clothing, or for any kind of lost thing which another claims to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whomever the judges condemn shall pay double to his neighbor. If a man delivers to his neighbor a donkey, an ox, a sheep, or any beast to keep, and it dies, is hurt, or driven away, no one seeing it, then an oath of the Lord shall be between them both, that he has not put his hand into his neighbor's goods; and the owner of it shall accept that, and he shall not make it good. But if, in fact, it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution to the owner of it. If it is torn to pieces by an animal, then he shall bring it as evidence, and he shall not make good what was torn. And if a man borrows anything from his neighbor, and it becomes injured or dies, the owner of it not being with it, he shall surely make it good. But if its owner was with it, he shall not make it good; if it was hired, it came for its hire."
Deut. 24:7 "If a man is found *kidnapping (Lit. stealing) any of his brethren of the children of Israel, and mistreats him or sells him, then that kidnapper shall die; and you shall put away the evil person from among you."
BibleNote: In Gen. 37:27-28 the brothers of Joseph sold him to a company of Ishmaelite traders. This shows the grace of God towards His people in that they were not killed for their deed, but instead Joseph was used to later save all Israel from starvation in the severe famine.

Ecc. 8:11 "Because the against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil."
Bible Note: I once read this verse to a State Trooper when my daughter's van was stolen, and I went to get her purse. He agreed with it completely.
Matt. 5:30 "And if your right hand causes you to *sin (Lit. stumble or offend) cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell."
BibleNote: There are cultures that still give out this type of punishment to those who steal, but I would hope the Lord is saying here to put yourself away from situations which cause you to sin.
Phil. 4:11-13 "Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
BibleNote: We were not born content, but lacking, and searching for something beyond ourselves. When we see that it is God we are missing, and we choose to seek Him above all else, contentment follows.
Heb. 13:5 "Let your conduct be without covetousness, and be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.' "   (Deut. 31:6, 8)
