Don't Hate - It's Not Productive

Gen. 4:1-8 "Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, 'I have gotten a man from the Lord,' Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. Abel also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. So the Lord said to Cain, 'Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is *for (Lit. toward) you, but you should rule over it.' Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose against Abel his brother and killed him."
Bible Note: The Lord spoke to Cain directly. Cain knew his offering was not acceptable at that time, but he chose to fester the hard feelings towards his brother until he killed Abel.
Gen. 37:3-4 "Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him."
Deut. 7:9-10 "Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep his commandments; and He repays those who hate Him to their face, to destroy them. He will not *be slack (delay) with him who hates Him; He will repay him to his face."
1 Kin. 22:8-9 "So the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, 'There is still one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may inquire of the Lord; but I hate him, because he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil.' And Jehoshaphat said, 'Let not the king say such things!' Then the king of Israel called an officer and said, 'Bring Micaiah the son of Imlah quickly!' "
1 Kin. 22:34-35 "Now a certain man drew a bow at random, and struck the king of Israel between the joints of his armor. So he said to the driver of his chariot, 'Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am wounded.' The battle increased that day; and the king was propped up in his chariot, facing the Syrians, and died at evening..."
Bible Note: Jehoshaphat hated Micaiah because he spoke God's truth and told him what he didn't want to hear.
Prov. 15:1-4 "A soft answer turns away wrath,
But a harsh word stirs up anger.
The tongue of the wise uses knowledge
   rightly,
But the mouth of fools pours forth
   foolishness.
The eyes of the Lord are in every place,
Keeping watch on the evil and the
   good.
A wholesome tongue is a tree of life,
But perverseness in it breaks the spirit."

Matt. 5:43-45

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust."

Mat. 12:34-35 "Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things."

Matt. 15:19-20 "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man."
Bible Note: I've just read a front page article in The Indiana Gazette, on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 that expresses this idea beautifully from Holocaust survivor, Moshe Baran in the Hadley Union Building on the IUP campus. His quote "The message I'm trying to convey to you is to avoid using the word 'hate.' " I agree with him completely. Only people caught up in the world's way of thinking would embrace a language of hate.
