Presumption

Lev 10:1-2 "Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord."
Bible Note: Presumption is defined as: to speak or act without warrant.
Num. 14:44-45 "But they presumed to go up to the mountaintop; nevertheless, neither the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed from the camp. Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that mountain came down and attacked them, and drove them back as far as Hormah."
Deut. 18:20-22 " 'But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.' And if you say in your heart, 'How shall we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?' - when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him."
Example: 1 Kin. 13:1-2, 18-24, 29-31, and 2 Kin. 23:17-18
Here a young prophet gives a message for the Lord, and has been commanded not to stay or eat there. But, an old prophet talks him into eating at his house, and it costs the young man his life. Why did the old man do this? Because the old man didn't want his bones to be burned.
2 Sam. 6:6-7 "And when they came to Nachon's threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and *took hold of it, (held it) for the oxen stumbled. Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his *error: (Or irreverence) and he died there by the ark of God."
Isa. 14:12-15 "How you are fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!
For you have said in your heart:
'I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of
   God;
I will also sit on the mount of the
   congregation
On the farthest sides of the north;
I will ascend above the heights of the
   clouds,
I will be like the Most High.'
Yet you shall be brought down to
   Sheol,
To the *lowest depths (recesses) of the Pit."

Bible Note: The Old Testament shows harsh punishment from presumption.
Luke 12:16-21 "Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: 'The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, "What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?" So he said, "I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.' " But God said to him, "You fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?" So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.' "
Bible Note: The Lord gives a parable to encourage people to seek God first.
Jas. 4:13-15 "Come now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit.'; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, 'If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.' "
Bible Note: As a babe in the Lord, while being taught the importance of fasting, I presumed I should do a 40 day fast, but after 13 hours impurities in my body caused me to become ill. I called a secretary at the church very upset that I could not fast. She lovingly said "The Lord will honor what you tried to do. It may be you are not supposed to fast." I learned right away to make sure you are directed by God to fast before you try to do that. If for health reasons you can't do a total fast, you can try to do a liquid fast. If it is truly His will that you fast the Holy Spirit will keep you healthy the entire time.
